Forty Days and Forty Nights

And now, not so suddenly we understand: why 40 days, why 40 nights, why cured meats and salt, why wine and unleavened bread, why fasting, why feasts, why opera gloves, hats, head scarves, and burkas, why meditation and prayer, why mourning coats and black veils and ashes to ashes, dust to dust. We understand all these cultural manifestations that once upon a time saved lives and when they did not, held our grief.
